So what is a kundalini awakening? First off, it is a life altering experience. Once you have had a kundalini awakening, your life will never be the same. I am no expert so a lot of the information I am listing I have found online, in books and some information is from my own experience. Kundalini awakenings are still a mystery and I am learning everyone's experience is unique to the individual with some similarities.
Kundalini is a divine spiritual force that lies dormant, coiled up at the base of the spine. Once the kundalini is awakened, a transformative process of spiritual emergence begins. I have found this description helpful as well "A kundalini awakening is a process of purification of our bodies and psyches so that we are strong enough to embody the Divine in this life."
How does kundalini awaken? A lot of times it can be spontaneous and unknown. It can also awaken as a result of trauma, illness, near death experience, yoga practice, energy work, personal crisis, as well as years of targeted practice.
"Some people awaken spiritually without ever coming into contact with any meditation technique or any spiritual teaching. They may awaken simply because they can't stand the suffering anymore." - Eckhart Tolle
What does a kundalini awakening feel like? Some days you feel bliss and intoxicating love, and other days you feel pain and emotional upheaval. There are also involuntary body movements involved in a kundalini awakening. These are called Kriyas. Physical experiences including shaking, trembling, and spontaneous yoga poses can occur. Some of the symptoms include alterations in breathing, rushes of energy, heart racing, loss of appetite, tingling sensations, sparking/electricity sensations, the feeling of ants crawling allover your skin, and fatigue.
Kundalini symptoms can differ for everyone.
Examples of Kundalini Symptoms
-Feeling a spiritual connection with the Divine
-Feeling an overwhelming sense of bliss
-You experience periods of oneness
-Synchronicity increases
-Empathetic abilities strengthen and you feel everything
-Involuntary body movements, shaking, trembling
-Your nervous system becomes extremely sensitive to external stressors(bright lights, loud noises, crowded places) and you crave solitude
-Sleeplessness and restlessness
-Sensations of intense heat or cold
-Altered states of consciousness
-You struggle to distinguish what is real from imagined, you feel like you are going crazy, spiritual psychosis can also occur
-Periods of emotional upheaval
-Anxiety and panic attacks
A kundalini awakening is a spiritual transformation. Be gentle on yourself and give yourself a lot of compassion. Your nervous system is being rewired and upgraded and it can also feel very open at times. The world may seem very different than what you were familiar with before. You can feel hypersensitive to sounds, lights, crowds, and even violence on tv. Feeling safe, taking extra care of yourself, and having a lot of time on your own is very important.
Things that I have found helpful in this process
-a weighted blanket
-warm epsom salt baths
-music
-lots of rest
-gentle yoga
-hot herbal tea
-journaling
-setting aside time where you can lay down and let your body do what it needs to
-dancing
-being in nature, and grounding
-going for walks
-doing things that bring you joy
Lately I have been enjoying the book called Kundalini Wonder by Dorothy Walters. I have found it helpful and enjoy her poems as well!
What is it ?
It has to do
with love.
It has to do with energy.
It has to do with the god force energy
that runs through everything.
It has to do with how we feel
when we are finally connected.
It is god
moving through your body.
It is the Beloved making love
with you from within,
even when you are not
expecting it.
It is you
coming home to yourself
at last.
-Dorothy Walters
Even though this experience can be extremely difficult and life changing, it is your own unique awakening experience. It can be so beautiful at times! You will have times where you will feel who you really are! Which is pure, unconditional love! When I am in a difficult and painful period, I always think about the times I have felt that bliss and know all the pain and ickiness is worth it. You are transforming! Give so much extra love to yourself in this process!
